Ind. loc.: "In cacumine montis Sypili [Mount Sipylus (Mount Spil, Manisa, Manisa-Salihli ancient capital of Lydia, Manisa Province, Turkey)] in radicibus..... (Boissier!), in Cariâ [Caria (SW Turkey)] (Pinard!)".

Lectotypus / Lectotype: G 00147181 [herb. Prodr. (G-DC)]: «A) "M [H?] Boissier 1844 // Orobanche coelestis B. & Reut.! / Caria 1843  C. Pinard"; B) "Phelipaea celestis Reut. / Orobanche celestis Boss. & Reut."». Declaramos lectótipo al ejemplar más grande de los dos del pliego [The G-DC sheet contains two specimens and we have designated as lectotype to the largest one].".

Designated by: Carlón, L., Gómez Casares, G., Laínz, M., Moreno Moral, G., Sánchez Pedraja, Ó. & Schneeweiss, G.M. in Documentos Jard. Bot. Atlántico (Gijón) 6: 44 (2008 [17 Jul 2008]).

Host: host-plant unknown. Lamiaceae / Labiatae[?], Micromeria cristata (Hampe) Griseb.; Phlomis sp.[?] were mentioned by (Beck, 1890: 115, "...Haussknecht ... Phlomidis..."; Bornmüller, 1904: 677; Beck, 1930: 94) (Annotated Checklist of Host Plants of Orobanchaceae, accessed Aug 2009). The host plant needs to be confirmed by further studies.

Comments:

Taxonomic observation: "Typus: Caria, Pinard, W!" (Schiman-Czeika, 1964: 9).

Morphological observations: "corollâ porrecta ... Scapus 4-5-pollicaris [10-12.5 cm]" (Reuter in DC. Prod. 11: 5. 1847); "Caulis semper simplex ... Corollae lobi obtusissimi" (Boissier: 1879: 495-496, sub Phelipaea celestis Reut.).

Morphological and taxonomic observations: O. coelestis, according to Beck 1930, is a heterogeneous mixture [!] of different species that have little to do with each other; e.g., sec. Beck, 1930: 93-94; Schiman-Czeika, 1964: 9-10; Flora of China and Flora of Pakistan (accessed Oct 2008) this species is conspecific with Phelipanche heldreichii (Reut.) Soják ["Gruppe der Trichocalyces (O. Schultzii, stricta, trichocalyx)" (sensu Beck, 1890: 117)]. However, from our point of view, P. coelestis is morphologically very different to Phelipanche heldreichii and to the "Gruppe der Trichocalyces". It is relatively morphologically similar to Phelipanche bungeana, P. cilicica, P. nowackiana (P. rechingeri), P. pulchella [incl. O. longiflora sensu Rchb. (1829), non Pers. (1806); Phelypaea longiflora sensu C.A. Mey. (1831), non Pers. (1806)] and P. tzvelevii.

Chromosomatic number: n: 12, 2n: 24 (Schneeweiss & al., 2004: 441, 443 f. 2 "(I) coelestis, 2n = 24 (diakinesis)").

Ic.: a, G 00147181 (herb. Prodr. (G-DC)]: A) «M Boissier 1844 / Orobanche coelestis B. & Reut.! / Caria 1843  C. Pinard»; lectotype); b, specimens (ib.); c, G 00074291 - Pinard 1843 (ib.; isolectotype); d, specimens (ib.); e, MA 742261 (Aragat mountain, Aragatsotn province, Armenia); f, G 00147181 (Caria; lectotype) vs. MA 742261 (Aragat); g, flowers of the types of Phelipanche sp. (P. pulchella vs. coelestis vs. nowackiana vs. tzvelevii).

Distribution: its distribution is not well known, because it has frequently been confused with other species (e.g., Phelipanche heldreichii [Asia, on Eryngium sp.]; Phelipanche pulchella [Asia (Imeritia, leg. Szovits)]; P. portoilicitana [N Africa, Bengashi, on Centaurea sp.]).
