However, from our point of view, it is morphologically very different to Ph. coelestis.

Ind. loc.: "In cacumine montis Sypili in radicibus..... (Boissier!), in Cariâ (Pinard!)." [see Mount Sipylus (Mount Spil, Manisa, Manisa-Salihli ancient capital of Lydia, Manisa Province, Turkey) and Caria (SW Turkey) in Wikipedia (accessed 17 Sept. 2007)].

Lectotypus / Lectotype: G 00147181 [herb. Prodr. (G-DC)]: A) «M Boissier 1844 / Orobanche coelestis B. & Reut.! / Caria 1843  C. Pinard»; B) «Phelipaea celestis Reut. / Orobanche celestis Boss. & Reut.». Declaramos lectótipo al ejemplar más grande de los dos del pliego.".

Designated by: Carlón, L., Gómez Casares, G., Laínz, M., Moreno Moral, G., Sánchez Pedraja, Ó. & Schneeweiss, G.M. in Documentos Jard. Bot. Atlántico (Gijón) 6: 44 (2008 [17 July 2008]).

Host: Lamiaceae[?], Phlomis sp.[?] (cf. Beck, 1890: 115, "...Haussknecht ... Phlomidis..."; Beck, 1930: 94) (cf. Annotated Checklist of Host Plants of Orobanchaceae, accessed 24 August 2009). The host plant needs to be confirmed by further studies.

Comments: "Typus: Caria, Pinard, W!" (sec. H. Schiman-Czeika, 1964: 9); "corollâ porrecta" (cf. Reuter in DC. Prod. 11: 5. 1847). O. coelestis, according to Beck 1930, is a heterogeneous mixture of different species that have little to do with each other; e.g., sec. Beck, 1930: 93-94; Schiman-Czeika, 1964: 9-10; Flora of China and Flora of Pakistan (accessed, 20 Oct. 2008) this species is conspecific with Phelipanche heldreichii (Reut.) Soják ["Gruppe der Trichocalyces (O. Schultzii, stricta, trichocalyx)" (sensu Beck, 1890: 117)]. However, from our point of view, Ph. coelestis is morphologically very different to Phelipanche heldreichii and to the "Gruppe der Trichocalyces". It is relatively morphologically similar to Phelipanche bungeana, Ph. cilicica, Ph. nowackiana (Ph. rechingeri), Ph. pulchella [incl. Orobanche longiflora sensu Rchb., Iconogr. Bot. Pl. Crit. 7: 47, t. 695 f. 932 (1829), non Pers. (1806); Phelypaea longiflora sensu C.A. Mey., Verz. Pfl. Casp. Meer.: 104 (1831), non Pers. (1806)].

Chromosomatic number:

Ic.: a, G 00147181 (herb. Prodr. (G-DC)]: A) «M Boissier 1844 / Orobanche coelestis B. & Reut.! / Caria 1843  C. Pinard»; lectotype); b, specimens (ib.); c, G 00074291 - Pinard 1843 (ib.; isolectotype); d, specimens (ib.); e, MA 742261 (Aragat mountain, Aragatsotn province, Armenia); f, G 00147181 (Caria; lectotype) vs. MA 742261 (Aragat).

Distribution: its distribution is not well known, because it has frequently been confused with other species (e.g., Phelipanche heldreichii [Asia, on Eryngium sp.]; Phelipanche pulchella [Asia (Imeritia, leg. Szovits)]; Ph. portoilicitana [N Africa, Bengashi, on Centaurea sp.]).
