Comments:

Morphological and taxonomic observations: Cistanche violacea can be confused with C. salsa, which can be distinguished for their densely woolly bracts and bracteoles (Boulos 2002: 94). In Europe it has been recorded from Spain, but these records refer to Cistanche lutea var. violaceoides Moreno Mor., Ó. Sánchez & Piwow. (2018), which are violaceous forms of C. lutea (Desf.) Hoffmanns. & Link (1813) (Beck 1930: 27-29, key; Boulos 2002: 94, key; Ozenda 1991: 388, key).

Chromosomatic number: n = ca. 20; 2n = ca. 40c (Reese 1957; Schneeweiss & al. 2004); n = 30 (Ataei & al. 2014). The Spanish chromosome counts are referable to violaceous forms of C. lutea (Desf.) Hoffmanns. & Link (C. lutea var. violaceoides Moreno Mor., Ó. Sánchez & Piwow.).
